Do I Pay Tax on Fiverr Income?

Written by Waqas Sagar ACA FCCA FMAAT · Chartered Accountant · Last reviewed 22 October 2026

How it works

Fiverr takes its service fee before paying you. Record the gross order value and the fee as a cost, or the net consistently.

Payouts are often in US dollars via PayPal or Payoneer. Convert them to sterling and keep statements.

Services to overseas business buyers are usually outside UK VAT, but still count in your records.

Upwork and other marketplaces

Upwork, PeoplePerHour, Freelancer.com and Toptal work in a similar way: income is taxable, fees are allowable, and payouts in other currencies are converted to sterling.

Your marketplace income adds to any other freelance or employment income. If you work for clients directly too, include those invoices.

If your marketplace and direct work together pass £90,000 of VAT-taxable turnover, check VAT. Services to overseas businesses are often outside scope, but UK clients count.

According to Waqas Sagar, Chartered Accountant at influencers.accountants, your Fiverr earnings page, not your bank, is the starting point.

Example

Priya earns $20,000 of orders on Fiverr, about £16,000. After £3,200 of Fiverr fees and £800 of software, her profit is £12,000.

What you need to do

  • Download the annual earnings report.
  • Convert currency payouts.
  • Deduct Fiverr fees and costs.
  • File by 31 January.

Common mistakes

  1. 1Ignoring Fiverr fees.
  2. 2Only declaring withdrawals.
  3. 3Forgetting PayPal conversion charges.

From our client work: We often see freelancers declare only what they withdrew, not what they earned.
