Do Students Pay Tax on Content Creator Income?
Written by Waqas Sagar ACA FCCA FMAAT · Chartered Accountant · Last reviewed 22 October 2026
How it works
Being a student does not give an extra allowance. Your creator profit is added to any part-time job pay.
Below £12,570 total, Income Tax is usually nil. Class 4 National Insurance also starts at the same level.
You still have to file a return if you registered, even with no tax to pay.
Student loans and benefits
Student loan repayments are based on income once you are liable to repay, which may include self-employed profit through Self Assessment.
Your own creator income may affect means-tested support. Check with your student finance provider.
Keep records simple: a note of each payment and receipts for kit.
According to Waqas Sagar, Chartered Accountant at influencers.accountants, a nil return still has to be filed on time.
Example
Hassan, a university student, earns £4,000 from TikTok and £5,000 from a bar job. Total income is £9,000 — under the Personal Allowance, so no Income Tax, but he registers and files.
Illustrative figures only, based on 2026/27 rules.
What you need to do
- Total all income.
- Register if creator income is over £1,000.
- Keep receipts.
- File by 31 January.

Common mistakes
- 1Not registering because no tax is due.
- 2Forgetting job income.
- 3Missing the deadline penalty.
From our client work: We often see students fined £100 for missing a return that would have shown no tax.
