Do Twitch Streamers Pay Tax in the UK?
Written by Waqas Sagar ACA FCCA FMAAT · Chartered Accountant · Last reviewed 22 October 2026
How it works
Donations and tips to a streamer who streams to make money are usually income, not personal gifts.
Twitch may withhold US tax on some earnings without a valid W-8BEN treaty claim.
Streaming kit, software and moderator payments are allowable costs.
What streamers can claim
Gaming PC or console used for streaming, capture cards, cameras, microphones, lighting, green screens and acoustic treatment.
Overlays, alerts, music licences, streaming software and payments to moderators or editors.
A proportion of home internet and electricity, based on business use. Games bought specifically to stream may be claimable; games played mostly for fun are not.
According to Waqas Sagar, Chartered Accountant at influencers.accountants, list every way viewers can pay you, then check each is on your return.
Example
Noah earns £18,000 in subs and bits, £4,000 in donations and £5,000 sponsorship. After £3,000 of costs, his profit is £24,000.
