How it works

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Your first year is the one in which you pass the allowance.

You register, keep records, then file and pay after the year ends.

If your only income is £8,000 profit from creating, it sits within your £12,570 Personal Allowance and below the Class 4 National Insurance threshold, so you may owe nothing — but you still file.

First-year timeline

Year 1 (6 April – 5 April): you start earning and keep records.

By 5 October after: register for Self Assessment.

By 31 January after: file online and pay any tax, plus a first payment on account if your bill is over £1,000.

According to Waqas Sagar, Chartered Accountant at influencers.accountants, registering early does not cost anything and avoids penalties later.

Example

Amy starts in September 2026 and earns £6,000 by April 2027. She registers by 5 October 2027 and files by 31 January 2028. With no other income, she may owe no tax.
