Getting started
Do I Need a UTR Number as a YouTuber?
Written by Waqas Sagar ACA FCCA FMAAT · Chartered Accountant · Last reviewed 22 October 2026
How it works
Your UTR is a 10-digit number that identifies you for Self Assessment.
You get it by registering online. HMRC usually posts it within a few weeks, and it also appears in your HMRC app or account.
It is different from your National Insurance number. You keep the same UTR for life.
Where you will use it
On your Self Assessment return each year.
When your accountant sets up agent access.
Some agencies and platforms ask for it during onboarding, and mortgage lenders may ask for tax documents linked to it.
According to Waqas Sagar, Chartered Accountant at influencers.accountants, register as soon as you pass the allowance — waiting for the UTR is the slowest part.
Example
Owen hits £1,500 of AdSense in his first year. He registers in June, receives his UTR in the post three weeks later, and uses it to file in autumn.
