Handling Google Ireland AdSense on your VAT return
For UK VAT-registered YouTubers, Google AdSense income originates from Google Ireland Ltd (an EU business entity). Because the supply is business-to-business (B2B) outside the UK, it is treated as outside the scope of UK VAT.
For a general-rule B2B supply to Google Ireland, normally do not charge UK VAT. VAT return reporting and recovery of input tax depend on the supply and normal recovery rules. Reverse charge on overseas editing or software purchases is a separate issue.
Capital allowances on high-end production equipment
Cameras, lenses, microphones and editing computers may qualify for equipment relief. Check cash-basis treatment or capital allowances, business-use proportions, purchase or leasing arrangements and any conditions for company full expensing.
Where immediate relief is available, the business cost can reduce taxable profit in the relevant year. The outcome depends on eligibility and available profit; a deduction is not a refund of the purchase price.

Got questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is YouTube AdSense income subject to 20% UK VAT?▼
Normally no UK VAT is charged on a general-rule B2B service supplied to Google Ireland. Confirm the contractual customer and supply. This does not classify every YouTube payout or settle the VAT-return entries for other income.
Can I expense travel for YouTube video shoots?▼
Travel directly required for filming specific content (e.g. flights, train tickets, hotel stays for a documented video shoot) can be claimed. However, incidental personal holiday extensions cannot be claimed.
Can I pay my channel editor as an allowable business expense?▼
Yes. Freelance editor invoices, sound engineers, voiceover artists, and thumbnail illustrators are 100% allowable business operating expenses.
