Contractual obligation vs unsolicited gift
A product supplied in exchange for content is normally a trading receipt in kind. An unsolicited item is not automatically tax-free just because no post is required: consider the connection with the trade, ownership, use and any ability to turn it into money.
However, the moment there is a contract, email agreement, or clear understanding ('we will gift you this £800 handbag in exchange for 1 TikTok video and 2 Instagram stories'), the gift is trading consideration. You must declare £800 as trading revenue.
Selling gifted items on second-hand apps
Selling a gifted item needs a separate review of trading income, previous income-in-kind recognition and allowable cost, to avoid double counting. Platform seller reporting has scope and exclusions and does not itself determine whether a sale is taxable.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if a gifted product is worth less than the retail price to me?▼
Use a supportable value appropriate to the receipt and condition, not automatically the full new retail price. Keep the agreement and valuation evidence; restricted, returned or non-transferable items need specific review.
Are free hotel stays on press trips taxable?▼
If the hotel or tourism board provides accommodation in exchange for documented coverage, reviews, or social posts, the commercial value of the room and flights must be included in your trading accounts.
