Platform Specialist

TikTok Shop & Creator Accountants

Direct Answer / Key Takeaway

TikTok Shop transactions involve online marketplace deemed-supplier VAT rules, gross commission reconciliations, sample inventory tracking, and creator fund payouts.

Target Audience

Who this service is built for

TikTok Shop sellers, affiliate creators, live-streamers, and agencies managing TikTok viral shopping campaigns.

What we cover in this service

  • Marketplace deemed-supplier VAT rules for TikTok Shop UK sellers
  • Reconciliation of gross affiliate commission vs net platform payouts and processing fees
  • Proper tax accounting for gifted sample products sent by merchants for video reviews
  • Corporation Tax planning for high-volume viral revenue spikes

Reconciling TikTok Shop payouts gross of platform fees

TikTok deposits payouts net of commission fees, transaction processing charges, customer refund adjustments, and shipping subsidies. Declaring only the bank deposit under-reports your true turnover.

Under UK accounting standards, you must book gross sales as revenue and declare TikTok's deductions as allowable commercial fees, ensuring accurate VAT and tax calculations.

Affiliate commissions and sample inventory

If merchants send you free sample products with an agreement that you showcase them on TikTok Shop, the market value of those items constitutes taxable business income in kind.

For creators also holding physical stock, year-end stocktakes and inventory valuation are required for accurate Corporation Tax computation.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I pay tax on TikTok Creator Rewards?▼

Yes. All income from the TikTok Creator Rewards Program is taxable self-employed or company trading income and must be reported on your tax return.

How does TikTok Shop handle VAT?▼

If you sell goods on TikTok Shop, TikTok may act as a deemed supplier for certain overseas sellers or retail schemes, but UK VAT-registered sellers remain responsible for correct reporting. We reconcile your monthly settlement reports.

Allowable expenses for TikTok creators

How HMRC’s rules apply to TikTok creators

If you are self-employed

Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.

If you run a limited company

A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.

For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.

Costs to review for your work

  • Business-use cameras, lighting, audio equipment and editing software
  • Editors, thumbnail designers, virtual assistants and licensed music
  • Travel to business shoots and the evidenced business share of home-working costs

Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.

Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

General UK guidance, not personal advice. The deduction depends on your facts and accounting basis.
