Creators paid in crypto
Brand deals or tips settled in tokens are income at the pound value on the day you receive them.
Sponsorships paid in tokens, exchange trading, staking rewards and NFT drops — matched, calculated and reported the way HMRC expects.
Part of our guide to accountant for content creators UK.
HMRC treats most crypto as property, not currency. Disposals — selling, swapping one token for another or spending crypto — can create Capital Gains Tax, while tokens received for work, mining or many staking rewards are taxed as income at their sterling value when received. NFT sales follow the same rules.

Who this is for
Brand deals or tips settled in tokens are income at the pound value on the day you receive them.
Swaps between coins are disposals, so a busy year can mean hundreds of gains to calculate.
Mint sales and royalties may be trading income; collectors usually face capital gains.

HMRC's Cryptoassets Manual explains that individuals holding tokens as investments normally pay Capital Gains Tax on disposals. The annual exempt amount is small, so many active holders now need to report gains on their Self Assessment return.
Tokens received as payment for content, services or mining are income. Record the sterling value when received; that value also becomes your acquisition cost when you later sell. HMRC guidance on receiving cryptoassets covers the main cases.
Crypto losses can be claimed against gains, but only once reported to HMRC within four years. A token that becomes worthless may qualify for a negligible value claim.

Expenses
A cost is only allowable when it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the business; split mixed-use items and keep evidence. HMRC guidance on self-employed expenses sets the starting rules — company and director costs can be treated differently.
Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.
A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.
For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.
Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.
Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.
