Quick answer

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires digital records, quarterly updates and an annual tax return through compatible software. Entry is based on combined gross self-employment and property income: over £50,000 in 2024/25 for April 2026; over £30,000 in 2025/26 for April 2027; over £20,000 in 2026/27 for April 2028. Tax explained

How Making Tax Digital for self employed works

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a change to how self-employed people and landlords report to HMRC, not a change to the tax rates themselves. Once in scope, you keep digital records, submit quarterly updates and still submit an annual tax return through compatible software.

The thresholds are based on qualifying income: the gross turnover from your self-employment added to any property income, before expenses are deducted. Our tax config sets out the phasing HMRC has confirmed — income over £50,000 brings you in from April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027, and over £20,000 from April 2028 — and your specific start date is worked out from an earlier tax return, so growth this year can determine when you join.

For creators, the practical challenge is usually reconciling multiple platform payouts, currencies and payment schedules into a single, digitally-linked set of records each quarter, rather than the reporting itself. Sponsorship invoices, AdSense statements and subscription platform payouts all need to flow into the same software without manual re-keying breaking the digital link HMRC requires.

The final declaration at the end of the year is where personal allowances, reliefs, trading losses and any other income get applied, much as they do on a Self Assessment return today. The quarterly updates before it are simply running totals of income and expenses, so there is no tax to pay at each submission, only at the usual payment dates.

Some people are exempt, including those digitally excluded for reasons such as age, disability or location, and there are separate rules for very low income and for the year someone starts or stops trading. We check your circumstances rather than assuming MTD applies automatically once income crosses a headline number.

Expenses

MTD and expenses: what stays the same

Moving to Making Tax Digital does not change what you can claim against tax; it changes how often and in what format the figures are reported. See bookkeeping for creators for how we build quarter-ready records, and VAT for influencers if your turnover also brings you into VAT alongside MTD for Income Tax.

Usually claimable

  • MTD-compatible software or bridging software subscriptions
  • Cameras, editing equipment and studio costs, as before
  • Accountancy fees for quarterly update preparation
  • Cloud storage and record-keeping tools
  • Bank and payment platform fees

Usually not claimable

  • Personal spending run through the same software
  • Costs unrelated to the self-employment or property business
  • Entertaining
  • Fines or penalties, including MTD late-filing penalties

How HMRC’s rules apply to content creators

If you are self-employed

Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.

If you run a limited company

A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.

For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.

Costs to review for your work

  • Business-use cameras, lighting, audio equipment and editing software
  • Editors, thumbnail designers, virtual assistants and licensed music
  • Travel to business shoots and the evidenced business share of home-working costs

Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.

Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Structure

Sole trader or limited company?

MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords, not to limited companies, which already file separately under Corporation Tax. For creators weighing up incorporation, an approaching MTD threshold is one more factor: a limited company sidesteps personal MTD for Income Tax, though the company itself still needs proper digital bookkeeping regardless.

VAT & MTD

VAT and Making Tax Digital

VAT

MTD for Income Tax is separate from MTD for VAT, which already applies to all VAT-registered businesses regardless of income level. A creator can be in scope for MTD for VAT well before reaching the Income Tax thresholds, so see VAT for influencers for how the two run alongside each other.

Registration threshold: £90,000 · Deregistration: £88,000

Making Tax Digital

The phasing confirmed by HMRC brings in creators with qualifying income over £50,000 from April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027, and over £20,000 from April 2028, based on qualifying income shown on an earlier tax return. We track your running turnover against these figures each year so software and processes are ready ahead of your date, not after it.

  • April 2026: qualifying income above £50,000
  • April 2027: qualifying income above £30,000
  • April 2028: qualifying income above £20,000
