Planning around variable platform and campaign income.
Plan before the year ends — with practical forecasts for tax reserves, pension contributions, business structure and the money you can safely take out.
Part of our guide to creator accounting services.
Creator tax planning means looking ahead rather than simply reporting last year. We forecast personal and company tax, compare salary, dividends and pension contributions, protect cash for payments on account, and review structure before the year end while useful choices are still available.

Good creator tax planning starts with a forecast, not a product. We map expected revenue, genuine business costs, existing income, drawings and deadlines, then show the likely tax position in plain English.
For a sole trader, profit is taxed personally in the year it arises. Leaving money in a business bank account does not postpone that tax, so reserves must follow profit rather than drawings.
For a company, Corporation Tax applies first. Salary, dividends, employer pension contributions and retained profit then have different consequences. The useful answer comes from comparing the combined company and personal position.
Pension contributions may provide relief, but contribution limits, carry forward and the commercial purpose of company contributions matter. We handle the tax calculation and coordinate with a regulated adviser where product advice is needed.
Timing matters around 5 April and a company year end. Once the period closes, many planning options disappear and the work becomes compliance rather than planning.
Our reviews also cover the practical outcome: how much cash should stay for tax, what can be taken safely, and whether the business can afford the next editor, studio or equipment purchase.

Expenses
Allowable expenses in a tax planning context are less about receipts and more about the choices that shape your final profit figure — qualifying employer pension contributions, forecasting tools and the professional fees behind tax planning and pensions advice all reduce what is taxed. Combined with ordinary running costs already claimed elsewhere, these decisions are best made before your company or personal year end, while pension and dividend timing can still be adjusted rather than after the figures are fixed.
Use the creator expenses checklist alongside a planning review so every deductible cost is captured before your year end.
Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.
A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.
For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.
Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.
Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Structure
Your business structure affects which returns, records and planning choices apply. We compare sole trader and limited company routes on the complete position before recommending a change.
Illustrative estimate only. Uses the published 2026/27 tax configuration. Assumes a single-director company drawing all profit, with no Employment Allowance. Excludes expenses, student loans, pensions, other income, Scottish rates and individual circumstances. Not tax advice.
VAT & MTD
VAT depends on rolling taxable turnover, customer location and whether the supply is made to a business or consumer. Overseas platforms and brands require specific place-of-supply evidence.
