Quick answer

Creator income can look irregular to a lender or visa caseworker. We prepare accountant references using verified tax returns, computations, accounts and current management figures, explain platform and company income clearly, and answer reasonable follow-up questions. The recipient still makes its own lending or immigration decision.

How accountant references for creators works

A professional reference verifies facts from records. It should not predict approval, promise future income or answer questions outside an accountant’s competence.

For sole traders, recipients commonly ask for two or three years of tax computations and HMRC tax-year overviews. The figures need to match the returns exactly.

For company directors, salary, dividends, shareholding, company profit and retained reserves may all be relevant. Different lenders assess these in different ways.

Creator businesses need extra explanation because platform statements, agency deductions, foreign currency and campaign timing can make bank receipts look unlike accounting income.

We work with the broker, lender, landlord or adviser to establish the required format, prepare the evidence and answer reasonable queries with your authority.

The strongest application is prepared early: filed returns up to date, no unexplained differences, clean bookkeeping and a consistent story across every form.

Expenses

Expenses for accountant reference and certificate work

If you need an accountant reference for creators UK, only costs incurred wholly for the business are deductible — the reference itself is a business cost when it supports business finance, not private borrowing. Bookkeeping and accountancy fees behind the figures usually qualify, while personal application fees do not. Keep your Self Assessment for creators return, limited company accounts and bookkeeping consistent throughout the year.

Usually claimable

  • Reference fees connected to business finance
  • Bookkeeping needed to produce management figures
  • Accountancy fees for finalising accounts
  • Professional certificates required by a business counterparty

Usually not claimable

  • Fees for a wholly private application without business connection as a trade expense
  • Unverified future income
  • Inflated or adjusted figures requested for approval
  • Personal costs unrelated to the business

Use our creator expenses checklist to keep records tidy before your next mortgage or visa application, and ask us about a reference once your accounts are finalised.

How HMRC’s rules apply to content creators

If you are self-employed

Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.

If you run a limited company

A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.

For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.

Costs to review for your work

  • Business-use cameras, lighting, audio equipment and editing software
  • Editors, thumbnail designers, virtual assistants and licensed music
  • Travel to business shoots and the evidenced business share of home-working costs

Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.

Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.
