Partners, Family & Teams: Tax Rules for Shared Creator Businesses

Shared channels need more than an informal split of the payout. Ownership, work, contracts and safeguarding should agree before income is divided between partners, relatives or team members.

Quick answer

Running a channel with a partner in the UK can create a partnership, company or two separate businesses depending on the facts. Income should follow genuine ownership, contracts and work, not an arbitrary tax-saving split. Payments to children or relatives must be commercial, documented and compliant with employment and safeguarding rules.

Tax explained

How running a channel with a partner tax UK works

Agree ownership, responsibilities, profit shares, expenses and exits in writing. A joint business can be a partnership even without a formal label, requiring registration and partnership returns. If one creator owns the channel and pays the other for services, invoices and contracts should reflect that different relationship.

Potentially, if the payment is genuinely for work, commercially reasonable and actually paid for the child’s benefit. Payroll, National Minimum Wage exceptions, safeguarding and parental controls may apply. An inflated fee designed mainly to shift family income is unlikely to withstand scrutiny.

They can be. UK child performance and employment rules depend on the child’s age, location, activity, schedule and whether the appearance is a performance. Tax advice does not replace safeguarding or licensing compliance, so contact the relevant local authority before regular or paid filming.

Sometimes. Genuine personal gifts with no business reward may be outside trading income, while reward-based crowdfunding, pre-sales and campaign funding for a creator business are commonly taxable receipts. The campaign terms, promises to supporters and use of funds determine the treatment.

Often, when a prize arises from the creator trade or professional activity. A wholly personal windfall can be different. Cash, equipment and trips should be reviewed using the competition terms and business connection, with any qualifying costs considered separately.

Both are generally business income, but merch creates stock, fulfilment, consumer and VAT issues that service-based brand deals may not. If a print-on-demand supplier is principal, commission might be your turnover; if you sell as principal, customer revenue may be your turnover.

The starting point for running a channel with a partner tax UK is the difference between gross receipts and taxable profit. Gross receipts include money and non-cash value earned through the activity. Profit deducts qualifying business costs. Platform reporting is an information rule; it does not replace this calculation.

Use the figures in the 2026/27 tax tools only after income and costs have been classified correctly. The £1,000 trading allowance, £90,000 VAT registration threshold and Making Tax Digital entry points apply across the relevant business, not once for every app.

Action plan

How to get your tax position in order

Follow these steps before completing a return or replying to HMRC.

  1. 1

    Export every income source

Download platform statements and reconcile gross sales, tips, refunds and deductions to the bank.

  2. 2

    Separate personal disposals from trading

Record why each item or receipt arose and identify goods acquired with a resale intention.

  3. 3

    Match costs to the activity

Keep invoices and allocate mixed-use costs on a fair, consistent basis.

  4. 4

    Check registration and deadlines

Review the trading allowance, Self Assessment, VAT and Making Tax Digital positions.

  5. 5

    File or correct the figures

Submit accurate returns and seek advice before responding to an HMRC letter or correcting past years.

Expenses

running a channel with a partner tax UK: allowable costs

A cost must relate to the trade, and mixed personal use needs a fair restriction. Keep the invoice and note the business purpose.

Usually claimable

  • Genuine wages and freelancer fees for production work
  • Merch stock and fulfilment
  • Partnership accountancy and legal agreements
  • Safeguarding and licence administration
  • Campaign production costs

Usually not claimable

  • Arbitrary family payments with no work evidence
  • Private family holidays described as shoots
  • Drawings treated as a partnership expense
  • Personal gifts deducted as wages
  • Fines for licensing failures

Use the creator expenses checklist to organise evidence before filing.

How HMRC’s rules apply to content creators

If you are self-employed

Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.

If you run a limited company

A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.

For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.

Costs to review for your work

  • Business-use cameras, lighting, audio equipment and editing software
  • Editors, thumbnail designers, virtual assistants and licensed music
  • Travel to business shoots and the evidenced business share of home-working costs

Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.

Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

  • Treating a platform reporting threshold as a tax-free allowance.
  • Recording net payouts instead of gross receipts and separate fees.
  • Mixing personal items or journeys into business costs without evidence.
  • Waiting until the filing deadline to reconstruct stock, tips or mixed income.

What to do next

  1. 1Download statements and preserve invoices now.
  2. 2Separate personal activity from profit-seeking trade.
  3. 3Check the £1,000 allowance, VAT turnover and filing deadlines.
  4. 4Get a fixed-fee quote if the facts or past years are unclear.

Structure

Sole trader or limited company?

Start with the simplest structure that reflects ownership and risk. A limited company is not automatically more tax-efficient; compare ongoing profit, cash needs, administration and commercial exposure.

VAT & MTD

VAT and Making Tax Digital

VAT

VAT uses taxable turnover on a rolling 12-month basis, before deducting costs. Review the position before turnover reaches £90,000 and take separate advice on overseas, second-hand or digital supplies.

Registration threshold: £90,000 · Deregistration: £88,000

Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is phased by gross qualifying income. Good digital records now reduce the work needed when your threshold date arrives.

  • April 2026: qualifying income above £50,000
  • April 2027: qualifying income above £30,000
  • April 2028: qualifying income above £20,000
