Good record-keeping apps for creators combine bank feeds, receipt capture, multi-currency handling and Making Tax Digital compatibility. Several well-known packages cover these needs; the right choice depends on your income streams and how hands-on you want to be, so we help you set up whichever fits.

HMRC requires you to keep accurate records of your business income and expenses regardless of which tools you use — an app does not change what needs to be recorded, only how easily you can do it.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will require many self-employed creators to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC once their qualifying income crosses the relevant threshold, starting from April 2026 for those over £50,000, and extending to lower thresholds in later years. Software that is described as MTD-compatible is built to handle this submission process directly.
Bank feeds work by securely connecting your business account to the software so transactions appear automatically, ready to be categorised. This matters for creators because payout patterns from multiple platforms can otherwise be time-consuming to enter by hand every month.
Receipt capture tools use image recognition to read a photographed or emailed receipt and pre-fill the transaction details, then store the image against that entry. This is particularly useful for equipment, travel and subscription costs, where HMRC expects evidence to support any expense claimed.
Multi-currency handling matters because many creators receive USD from ad revenue platforms or affiliate networks, or EUR from European brand deals. Good software records the transaction in its original currency and converts it to sterling using an appropriate exchange rate, which is what your tax return ultimately needs.
Categorisation features let you tag income and expenses against categories that map to Self Assessment or company accounts, which saves considerable time when your accountant, or you, come to prepare the actual return.
Reporting features, such as profit and loss summaries or VAT reports, help you keep an eye on your tax-year-to-date position rather than being surprised in January, and can support estimating what to set aside for tax and any payments on account.
Several well-known accounting packages are widely used by UK sole traders and small companies, generally covering the core needs above to varying degrees, alongside apps built specifically around receipt and expense capture that can be used alongside a core accounting package rather than instead of one. We do not have a commercial partnership with any particular provider, and we are not in a position to make head-to-head comparisons between them — the right choice depends on your income mix, whether you trade as a sole trader or a limited company, and how comfortable you are with software generally.
Whichever tool you choose, the habit that matters most is consistency: recording income and costs close to when they happen, rather than reconstructing months of activity from memory near a filing deadline.
None of this removes the need for an accountant to review the figures, apply the right reliefs and allowances, and file correctly on your behalf — software organises the raw data, but interpreting and submitting it accurately is still a professional judgement.

Expenses
Allowable expenses for content creator bookkeeping software UK include subscription fees for the accounting package itself, plus any receipt-capture or invoicing add-ons you pay for to run your business. These are treated the same as any other admin cost of trading — deductible in the year you pay for them, provided the software is used for business record-keeping rather than personal budgeting. Pair the right software with our bookkeeping for creators service and the creator expenses checklist to keep everything reconciled.
If you are not sure which package suits your income mix, our Making Tax Digital for creators service can help you choose and set it up correctly.
Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.
A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.
For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.
Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.
Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.
