Full-time streamers
Daily broadcasts as your main income.
Subs, bits, tips, sponsor reads, tournament prizes and a PC that costs as much as a car. We handle the lot.
Part of our guide to accountant for content creators UK.
Streamer tax in the UK covers subs, bits, donations, sponsorships and platform payouts, all taxed as trading income once you are streaming for profit. Streaming income is taxable UK trading income: subscriptions, bits, tips, sponsorships, ad revenue and prize money. Your PC, capture hardware, mic and the business share of your internet are deductible, and US withholding on Twitch payouts can usually be credited against your UK bill.

Your income is the gross amount generated by the channel, not the amount that reaches your bank. Twitch keeps a share of subscriptions and bits; payment processors take a cut of tips; currency conversion costs money. All of those are allowable costs, so recording gross income with separate fees usually produces a lower taxable profit than recording net receipts.
Against that income, claim the hardware and running costs of the channel: the business share of your PC, capture card, microphone, camera, lighting, stream deck, chair and desk, plus software subscriptions, overlay design and the business proportion of your internet.
US withholding tax is the recurring surprise for Twitch income specifically. Submitting a W-8BEN with a valid UK tax residency claim generally cuts the withholding rate sharply, and any tax that is still withheld correctly can usually be claimed as a credit against your UK bill under the double tax treaty — see our W-8BEN guide for UK creators.
Kick, YouTube and sponsorship income sit in the same trade as your Twitch income if streaming is your business, so all of it is consolidated onto one Self Assessment return with one set of expenses, not filed separately platform by platform.
Sole trader profits are taxed at Income Tax rates with Class 4 National Insurance on top. Streaming income tends to be more predictable once a channel matures than trend-driven content, which makes a limited company a realistic option earlier for full-time streamers than for creators with more volatile income.
Good records for a streamer are simple: monthly Twitch and Kick payout statements, sponsorship invoices, receipts for hardware and a note of the streaming-versus-personal split for shared equipment. That is enough to defend every claim if HMRC ever asks.

Expenses
Allowable expenses for streamers cover the hardware, software and running costs that make a broadcast possible, from your capture card to the business share of your internet. Compare notes with gaming creators and YouTubers on similar sponsorship and hardware claims, and check overseas platform income if US withholding is eating into your payouts.
Run your figures through the creator expenses checklist before your next filing, and talk to us if hardware or a team is about to grow.
Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.
A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.
For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.
Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.
Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Structure
Streaming income tends to be steadier than short-form once a channel matures, which makes incorporation a realistic step earlier than for trend-driven creators. The decision usually turns on whether you need every pound personally or can leave profit in the business to fund upgrades, a team or a quieter year.

VAT & MTD
Streaming subscriptions, paid viewer support and sponsorships can involve different contractual customers. Check whether you supply the platform or the viewer and where that customer belongs. A general-rule B2B supply to an overseas business is normally outside UK VAT; do not classify every Twitch or Kick payout by platform name alone. Read HMRC place-of-supply guidance and our creator VAT service.
Registration threshold: £90,000 · Deregistration: £88,000
For streaming trading receipts, review MTD eligibility using the specified earlier return, not your latest bank balance. April 2026 entry uses gross qualifying income over £50,000 in 2024/25; April 2027 uses over £30,000 in 2025/26; April 2028 uses over £20,000 in 2026/27. Company trading income is outside MTD for Income Tax. Eligible individuals submit quarterly updates and an annual tax return through compatible software; exemptions may apply. See HMRC eligibility guidance and MTD support.
