Tax explained

How TikTok Shop tax UK works

Selling on TikTok HMRC treatment starts with separating your two possible roles: seller and affiliate. As a seller you own the stock and declare gross sales, less cost of goods, TikTok’s commission, shipping and refunds. As an affiliate you never own the stock, so only the commission TikTok pays you counts as income.

Add any TikTok One brand fees or paid placements you earn alongside your Shop activity — these are declared as ordinary trading income too, at the fee agreed with the brand, not the value of any product exchanged.

What remains after allowable costs is taxable profit. Sole traders pay Income Tax above the Personal Allowance and Class 4 National Insurance above the lower profits limit; limited companies pay Corporation Tax on profit and the director then decides how to extract funds.

TikTok Shop VAT is a separate question from Income Tax. Registration is based on turnover, not profit, so a seller running high volumes on thin margins can be required to register well before their business feels large. Once registered, VAT is charged on your UK sales and reclaimed on eligible business costs.

Keep TikTok’s settlement and commission reports as your primary record. They show gross sales, fees, refunds and payouts separately, which is exactly the breakdown HMRC expects your accounts to be built from.

Expenses

TikTok Shop seller expenses: what you can claim on tax

Allowable expenses for TikTok Shop sellers span everything from the stock itself to the fees TikTok deducts before you are paid. Because sellers and affiliates have different cost structures, keep the two income streams separate in your records so cost of goods is only matched against genuine product sales, not commission income. Reconcile monthly against TikTok’s settlement reports so your bookkeeping reflects real profit, not just bank deposits.

Usually claimable

  • Cost of goods sold (stock purchased for resale)
  • TikTok Shop selling and payment processing fees
  • Postage, packaging and courier costs
  • Warehousing and third-party fulfilment fees
  • Samples given away to promote products
  • Photography and content production for listings
  • Business share of home space used for storage and packing
  • Software for inventory and order management
  • Accountancy, insurance and business banking fees
  • Advertising and TikTok promotion spend

Usually not claimable

  • Unsold stock still held at year end (not yet a cost)
  • Personal purchases made through your seller account
  • Everyday clothing worn in promotional videos
  • Fines, penalties and late VAT surcharges
  • The full value of returned stock claimed twice
  • Personal element of a mixed-use vehicle or phone

Track VAT-relevant turnover using the VAT threshold tracker so registration is planned for, not discovered after the fact.

How HMRC’s rules apply to TikTok creators

If you are self-employed

Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.

If you run a limited company

A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.

For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.

Costs to review for your work

  • Stock bought for resale, packaging and marketplace selling fees
  • Business postage, payment processing and product photography costs
  • The business share of storage and equipment, subject to the accounting basis

Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.

Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Structure

Sole trader or limited company?

Stock-based TikTok Shop businesses often justify incorporating earlier than pure content creators, because margins are thinner and volumes higher, making limited liability and clean separation of business banking more valuable sooner. Affiliates with no stock and lower turnover usually stay sole traders until profit is consistently above the basic rate band.

VAT & MTD

VAT and Making Tax Digital

VAT

TikTok Shop VAT registration is required once your rolling 12-month taxable turnover — combining own sales, affiliate commission and any other business income — passes £90,000. Turnover counts gross sales before fees, so high-volume sellers can reach the threshold while still reinvesting most of their margin into stock. Where TikTok acts as deemed supplier on certain overseas or imported sales, that turnover may be treated differently, which we check as part of registration.

Registration threshold: £90,000 · Deregistration: £88,000

Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is based on qualifying income — your gross trading income before expenses. A TikTok Shop seller with large turnover and modest margin can be brought into MTD earlier than the profit alone would suggest, so we check your position against the April 2026, 2027 and 2028 thresholds each year.

  • April 2026: qualifying income above £50,000
  • April 2027: qualifying income above £30,000
  • April 2028: qualifying income above £20,000
