If you make or buy items to sell on Etsy for profit, that is trading income. Etsy now reports seller data to HMRC under digital platform rules. An Etsy accountant records gross sales, claims materials and fees, applies the trading allowance where it helps, and keeps you ahead of VAT.

Selling things you make or buy to resell is trading; selling your own unwanted possessions usually is not. Trading profit goes on Self Assessment.
If gross trading income is £1,000 or less you may not need to report it. Above that, you can deduct actual costs or the £1,000 allowance — whichever is better.
Etsy collects VAT on some international sales itself. UK sellers only need to register for UK VAT when their own taxable turnover passes the threshold.

Expenses
A cost is only allowable when it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the business; split mixed-use items and keep evidence. HMRC guidance on self-employed expenses sets the starting rules — company and director costs can be treated differently.
Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.
A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.
For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.
Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.
Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Clearing out a wardrobe is not a business. Buying stock to flip, running a proper shop front, or selling in real volume on Vinted, eBay or Depop usually is. We help resellers work out which side of that line they are on, and put things right if HMRC has already been in touch.
Creator merch lines, print-on-demand and full stock brands — Shopify Payments, PayPal and Klarna payouts matched to real sales.
Commissions, originals, prints, Patreon, licensing and Arts Council grants — creative income, organised.
Logos, brand kits, YouTube thumbnails and social templates — billed to UK and overseas clients.
A house clear-out is not the same as buying furniture, bikes or electronics to flip. We help Marketplace sellers identify trading, reconstruct cash records and declare only the right profit.
No jargon, no sales calls you did not ask for. Just a clear price and a plan.
