Quick answer

Fiverr tax UK works the same as any self-employed income: you declare the gross value of every order, not the amount that lands in your balance, and claim Fiverr's service fee and withdrawal charges as costs. Fiverr reports seller data to HMRC, so your own records need to match it, and you register once you pass the £1,000 trading allowance.

Who this is for

Is this you?

Writers and voice talent

Copywriting, scriptwriting and voiceover gigs billed per project.

Sellers running several accounts or niches

Tax explained

How Fiverr tax UK works

Fiverr tax UK is straightforward once you see the shape of it: your taxable profit is gross gig and Pro contract earnings, plus any off-platform or affiliate income, less allowable business costs — Fiverr's service fee, withdrawal and currency conversion charges, software, hardware and a fair share of home working costs.

Income Tax applies above the Personal Allowance, and Class 4 National Insurance applies to profits above the lower profits limit, both collected through Self Assessment alongside any Class 2 you choose to pay voluntarily.

Because Fiverr is a reporting platform, HMRC receives seller data directly, so treat your own bookkeeping as the thing that needs to match the platform, not the other way round — freelancer tax UK compliance now starts from that assumption for anyone selling through an online marketplace.

Expenses

Fiverr freelancer expenses: what you can claim

Allowable expenses for Fiverr freelancers cover the commission Fiverr deducts before you are paid, plus the software, kit and home working costs that keep the gigs coming in. Because your Fiverr balance already shows figures net of fees, it is easy to under-claim without realising it. The freelance designers and freelance writers pages cover niche examples in more depth, and the creator tax and expenses checklist is a handy general reference too.

Usually claimable

  • Fiverr service fees and withdrawal charges
  • Currency conversion and Payoneer/PayPal fees
  • Laptop, monitor and peripherals
  • Design, writing and editing software
  • Stock assets, fonts and voice licensing
  • Home office costs, apportioned
  • Training relevant to your existing gig category
  • Professional fees and insurance

Usually not claimable

  • Clothing for buyer video calls
  • Commuting to a regular workspace you own
  • Training for an entirely new trade
  • Personal phone use
  • Client entertaining

How HMRC’s rules apply to fiverr freelancers

If you are self-employed

Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.

If you run a limited company

A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.

For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.

Costs to review for your work

  • Business-use cameras, lighting, audio equipment and editing software
  • Editors, thumbnail designers, virtual assistants and licensed music
  • Travel to business shoots and the evidenced business share of home-working costs

Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.

Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Structure

Sole trader or limited company?

Fiverr sellers usually start as sole traders — it is quick, cheap and the trading allowance covers very small earnings. A limited company becomes interesting once profit is well into the higher rate band or Fiverr Pro contracts push turnover up sharply.

VAT & MTD

VAT and Making Tax Digital

VAT

Registration is based on rolling 12-month taxable turnover against the threshold. Most Fiverr sellers stay below it because buyers are overseas, but gross gig earnings still count towards the figure, so it is worth checking as Pro contracts or off-platform work push turnover up.

Registration threshold: £90,000 · Deregistration: £88,000

Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax phases in from April 2026 by qualifying income, measured on gross earnings before Fiverr's fees. If you are in scope, quarterly digital updates replace the annual-only routine, and we run them for you.

  • April 2026: qualifying income above £50,000
  • April 2027: qualifying income above £30,000
  • April 2028: qualifying income above £20,000
