Full-time Upwork freelancers
Long-term contracts and repeat clients.
Hourly contracts, fixed-price milestones, escrow releases and Upwork's service fee — reconciled from the platform reports into a clean UK tax return.
Part of our guide to accountants for freelancers.
Upwork tax UK means declaring the gross contract value as self-employed income, not the amount released from escrow after fees. Claim the service fee, Connects, membership and withdrawal charges as costs, convert USD at the rate on the date received, and register for Self Assessment once you pass the trading allowance.

Learn moreTax explained
Upwork tax UK works like any other self-employment: the platform is a route to market, not an employer, so you are taxed on the profit of your trade — gross contract value less the costs of earning it.
Those costs include the Upwork service fee, Connects and membership, payment withdrawal and currency conversion charges, software and subscriptions, hardware at the business proportion, training that maintains your existing skills, and a share of home office costs.
Currency is where most freelancer tax UK returns go wrong. Use the sterling value on the date each payment is received, keep the monthly earnings report, and let the conversion fee be a cost rather than a silent reduction in income.
Sole trader profits are taxed at Income Tax rates with Class 4 National Insurance on top. Because platform work can be lumpy, we set a reserve from each withdrawal rather than trying to find a bill at the end.
Upwork income tax is only half the picture — VAT deserves a decision, not a drift. Gross earnings count towards the registration threshold even when the clients are overseas. Many Upwork freelancers register voluntarily because their sales are outside the scope while their costs carry reclaimable VAT.
Because Upwork is a reporting platform, HMRC already receives your earnings data, so records should reconcile from the outset: one business bank account, the monthly Upwork earnings report, receipts for software and equipment, and any off-platform invoices.
Once profit is consistently above the higher-rate threshold and you can leave money in the business, we model a limited company on your real numbers — including the cost of the extra filings, so the comparison is honest.

Expenses
Allowable expenses for Upwork freelancers UK-wide include the service fee Upwork deducts before you ever see the money, Connects, and the business share of the laptop and software the work depends on. Because contracts and escrow releases are reported gross, claiming the platform's cut properly keeps your taxable profit accurate. See our creator expenses checklist, compare structures with the sole trader vs limited company calculator, or read more at accountants for freelancers.
Check your own claims against our creator expenses checklist, then talk to us once contracts start paying enough to consider a limited company.
Self-employed costs must be incurred wholly and exclusively for your trade. If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you cannot also deduct actual expenses against that same income. Equipment treatment depends on cash basis or traditional accounting.
A limited company deducts costs incurred wholly and exclusively for its business. Equipment may need capital allowances rather than an immediate expense deduction. Personal use or company-paid private costs can create a taxable benefit or director’s loan entry; company ownership is not a blanket deduction.
For separable mixed-use costs, such as a phone bill, claim only the identifiable business proportion and keep evidence. This does not make ordinary clothing or every dual-purpose purchase deductible. A receipt alone does not prove a business purpose: retain the brief, invoice or usage record too.
Everyday clothing, ordinary grooming, personal meals, private gaming and fines are generally not deductible. Qualifying costumes or protective clothing and business-travel subsistence have different rules. Client entertaining is generally disallowed. Receiving a product from a brand does not automatically create an expense: record the income treatment separately and deduct only an allowable business cost.
Keep records alongside our creator expenses checklist, or discuss your costs with our bookkeeping team.

Structure
Start as a sole trader while income is finding its level — it is quick to register and losses are easy to relieve. Once profit sits comfortably in higher rate and you can retain money in the business, a limited company usually wins, and Upwork supports trading through a company account.
Illustrative estimate only. Uses the published 2026/27 tax configuration. Assumes a single-director company drawing all profit, with no Employment Allowance. Excludes expenses, student loans, pensions, other income, Scottish rates and individual circumstances. Not tax advice.
VAT & MTD
Gross earnings count towards the VAT registration threshold on a rolling 12-month basis, including work for overseas clients. Services to non-UK business clients are generally outside the scope of UK VAT under the client-side reverse charge, so registration can mean reclaiming VAT on costs without charging your clients more.
Registration threshold: £90,000 · Deregistration: £88,000
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax measures gross trading income before Upwork fees, so freelancers can be in scope earlier than their take-home suggests. Check the April 2026 and 2027 thresholds against gross earnings, not withdrawals.
